In December 2022, Val Thorens will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The ambitious project to build the resort was born between 1969 and 1971. A visionary engineer's out-of-the-ordinary bet, Val Thorens ski resort was born from the imagination of Pierre Schnebelen at a time when the boom in winter sports resorts was controversial. This developer and real estate promoter, already the mastermind behind several integrated ski resorts, never stopped using his skills to raise funds and get approvals to start a project that was considered pharaonic at the time: the construction of Europe's highest resort. Under the political authority of Joseph Fontanet, Mayor of the Valley of Belleville, President of the Savoie General Council and Minister, and with the help of his director of SODEVAB (society for the development of Belleville Valley equipment), Bernard Reverdy, and Councillor Ferdinand Martin and with the intervention of Pierre Josserand, one of his young Arts and Crafts comrades, Pierre Schnebelen commissioned the studies and work. Let's not forget those who played a decisive role such as Pierre Le Blanc de Cernex, Michel Herenger, Francois Buisson, Jacques Francois, Georges Cumin and many others. The adventure on site therefore begins with a small but determined team that will do everything in its power to exploit the enormous potential of this exceptional site.
